The Aurora Borealis were not necessarily discovered, as much as noticed. Many ancient civilizations mention the lights from the Northern Hemisphere in their stories. Pierre Gassendi is the first scientist to have referenced them in his notes, however they are referenced in information gathered from early Greek and Chinese civiliations.
